STAGE ONE FINAL ANIMATION

LIGHTING EXPERIMENT WITH UMBRELLAS

AFTER THIS EXPERIMENTATION, THE GROUP HAS FIGURED OUT SOME FLAWS.

1) WE HAVE SOLVED THE STRUCTURE AND IN THE WEEKEND, WE WILL BUILD A NEW PROTOTYPE.
2) FOUND SOME NEW INFORMATION REGARDING THE LIGHTING SYSTEM; WHICH WE WILL FIGURE OUT DURING THE WEEKEND.
3) PRUEK CUSTOM DESIGNED A COVER FOR EACH LED LIGHT TO SIT IN AND IT CREATES A VERY NICE EFFECT SO WE WILL FABRICATE THIS DESIGN IN MDF (LASER CUT).

EQUILEX: STAGE TWO

PROPOSAL (1) EVENT PLANNING

LANDSCAPE - LIKE SCREENS CREATED FROM THE WEAVING OF THREADS THAT INTERLOCK WITH THE STRUCTURE OF THE UMBRELLAS (WHICH IS ENHANCED BY THE LIGHTING). THE CONTINUATION OF THE LIGHT CIRCUIT CONCEPT IS DEMONSTRATED THROUGH THE LIGHTING SYSTEM.

THROUGH THE INCORPORATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL SOUNDS (THE USE OF RAIN DROPS TO CREATE A TEMPO), A PARTY - LIKE ATMOSPHERE IS CREATED.

SKETCH

PROPOSAL (2) EVENT PLANNING

TO CREATE A SCREEN SURFACE THROUGH AN ARRANGEMENT OF UMBRELLAS THAT LIGHT UP AND RESPOND TO THE BEAT OF THE SOUND THAT WE WISH TO CREATE (WITH THE MUSIC STUDENTS). A FEW OF THE UMBRELLAS WILL BE MOTORIZED TO ACTIVATE IN RESPONSE TO MOTION OR THE BEATS (HENCE RECASTING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF SPEAKERS/AMPLIFIERS).

THEREFORE, RELATING STAGE TWO WITH OUR INITIAL IDEA FROM STAGE ONE.

PROPOSAL (2) EVENT PLANNING EDIT

A PARTY LIKE ATMOSPHERE CREATED THROUGH BLINKING LIGHTS THAT RESPOND TO THE SOUNDS OF RAIN DROPS

RECORDINGS OF RAIN DROPS TO BE ALTERED TO CREATE TEMPOS THAT THE LIGHTING SYSTEM CAN REACT TO; IE, TO SLOW DOWN THE SPEED OF RAINDROPS AMPLIFYING THE SOUND THAT THE DROPLET MAKES WHEN IT COMES IN CONTACT WITH THE GROUND/SURFACE

ABOUT US

INTIAL FOLLY DESIGN AND EVENT(S) PROPOSAL

ACTING AS A TOWERING MUSIC EQUALIZER, THE PROPOSED FOLLY IS COMPOSED OF NUMEROUS CUBIC MODULES; WHICH RESULTS IN THE ORTHOGONAL FORM OF THE OVERALL DESIGN.

DUE TO INPUTS FROM EACH TEAM MEMBER, THE TOP OF THE FOLLY HAS BEEN TRUNCATED AND DEVELOPED INTO A STRUCTURAL ELEMENT; CREATING A LANDSCAPE.

TWO EVENTS ARE PUT FORWARD. INDIVIDUAL IDEAS ARE COMBINED FOR THESE EVENT PROPOSALS.

EVENT ONE. . . AS THE CROWDS BEGIN TO GATHER, HEAVY BASS MUSIC WILL BE PLAYED THROUGH SPEAKERS LOCATED NEAR THE SITE. THIS BASS WILL BE RECASTED IN THE FORM OF LIGHTING TO CREATE ILLUSIONS OF PULSING BEATS. THE PULSING MOTION OF THESE BEATS WILL BE STRENGTHENED AS CROWDS INCREASE. HOWEVER, WHEN CROWDS BEGIN TO DECREASE (AS THEY MOVE TOWARDS THEIR DESTINATION), THE HEAVY BASS MUSIC WILL FADE INTO THE DAILY SOUNDS RECORDED ON THE SITE (DURING THE DAY, SUCH AS FOOTSTEPS, CHATS, BIRDS CHIRPING, ETC). WHILST THIS OCCURS, THE EQUALIZER WILL BECOME A LARGE SCREEN FOR PROJECTIONS OF DISTORTED IMAGES. THE DISTORTION OF THESE IMAGES OF THE SITE DURING THE DAY ARE INTENDED TO ALTER THE PERCEPTION OF PEOPLE’S VIEWS AND SENSES IN THE PARK. AT THE SAME TIME, THE TOP OF THE FOLLY WILL HOUSE AN IMPRESSIVE LIGHTING DISPLAY TO CREATE A MISTY ATMOSPHERE AND FABRICATE A DELUSION OF A FLOATING LANDSCAPE.

EVENT TWO. . . A SCREEN HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO SEMI – ENCOMPASS THE FOLLY TO CREATE A DIVERTED PATH FOR VISITORS. THE SCREEN WILL ACT AS A PROJECTION SURFACE FOR LIGHTING AND PRODUCE AN AWE-INSPIRING EXPERIENCE FOR CROWDS OF FANS. AS PEOPLE WALK PASS THE SCREEN, LIGHTING WILL BE EMITTED FROM THE FOLLY TO CREATE SHADOWS AND DISTORTIONS THROUGH A DISCONTINUOUS TRANSLUCENTN LAYER. VARIOUS STORIES WILL BE TOLD ON EACH SCREEN WHERE PEOPLE WILL BECOME THE ACTORS.

DEVELOPED FOLLY DESIGN AND EVENT(S) PROPOSAL

ACTING AS A TOWERING MUSIC EQUALIZER, THE PROPOSED FOLLY IS FORMULATED FROM NUMEROUS CUBIC MODULES THAT EXTRUDE BEYOND THE STRUCTURAL SURFACE TO CREATE A 3 – DIMENSIONAL LANDSCAPE. THIS RESULTS IN THE OVERALL ORTHOGONAL FORM OF THE OVERALL DESIGN.

THE STRUCTURE HAS BEEN SIMPLIFIED TO THE BASICS TO ALLOW EFFICIENT CONSTRUCTION OF THE DESIGN WHILST PROVIDING ENOUGH STRENGTH TO KEEP THE FOLLY STABLE.

TWO EVENTS ARE PUT FORWARD. INDIVIDUAL IDEAS ARE COMBINED FOR THESE EVENT PROPOSALS.

EVENT ONE: AS THE CROWDS BEGIN TO GATHER, ELECTRONIC MUSIC WILL BE PLAYED THROUGH SPEAKERS LOCATED NEAR THE SITE. THE BASS MUSIC WILL BE RECASTED IN THE FORM OF THE LIGHTING TO CREATE ILLUSIONS OF PULSING BEATS. THE PULSING MOTION OF THESE BEATS WILL ENGAGE THE AUDIENCE WITH THE FOLLY. THE TOP OF THE FOLLY WILL HOUSE AN IMPRESSIVE LIGHTING DISPLAY TO CREATE A MISTY ATMOSPHERE AND FABRICATE A DELUSION OF A FLOATING LANDSCAPE.

EVENT TWO: SCREENS HAVE BEEN DESIGNED TO SEMI – ENCOMPASS THE FOLLY TO CREATE A DIVERTED PATH FOR VISITORS. THE SCREEN WILL ACT AS A PROJECTION SURFACE FOR LIGHTING AND PRODUCE AN AWE – INSPIRING EXPERIENCE FOR CROWDS OF FANS. AS THE AUDIENCE PASSES THROUGH THE SITE, LIGHTING WILL BE EMITTED FROM THE FOLLY TO CREATE SHADOWS AND DISTORTIONS. ABSTRACT STORIES REGARDING THE HISTORY OF MYERS PARK WILL BE PROJECTED THROUGH LIGHT GRAFFITI (PRODUCED BY STRIPES OF LED LIGHTING); THUS TRANSFORMING THE AUDIENCE INTO ACTORS.

25th July (First Group Meeting)

Discusing ideas for the events.

28th July

Pruek and Jaime: disussing solutions to simplifying the structure as well as increasing stability of the folly.

Lisa and Dian: making experimental models to test the materiality of the screens for one of our events.

29th July

Group: after discovering some technical issues with the folly and restrictions with the screens, the team sat down to discuss solutions of simplifying the structure of the folly so that it would cut down on material costs construction time. At the end, we all agreed on one solution, to weave two layers of shrink wrap (vertically and horizontally) to create square patches without the aid of vertical/horizontal poles.

As for the screens, we discovered that any structure above 1.5m would need a building consent so we brainstormed multiple designs that would be able to create the effect of a diverted pathway. However, these ideas will need to be refined during the weekend.

30th + 31st July (Weekend)

Saturday:

Pruek: experimental modeling to discover / resolve problems before beginning on the actual 1:20 laser cut model (which will test the structural loads of the folly).

Lisa: design solutions for the screens (the event) through Rhino modeling and then physical modeling to test materiality.

Jaime: tester animations for the stage two presentation to figure out complications and other methods to achieve the results desired.

Sunday:

Pruek: creating laser cut file for structural model and creating the 1:2 detail model to test projections and lighting systems.

Lisa: design solutions for the screen (developing the forms that were derived on Saturday) and creating the 1:2 detail model to test projections and lighting systems.

Jaime: continuing the animation testers and creating the 1:2 detail model to test projections and lighting systems.

Dian: continuing the animation testers; design solutions for the screens to allow the incorporation of the event into our animation and creating the 1:2 detail model to test projections and lighting systems.

1st August

Group: finishing the 1:2 detail model so that we can test the lighting systems and projections tonight / tomorrow. It took longer than expected but it looks pretty nice

10th August

SITE RESPONSE

DRAFT PRESENTATION FOR THE FOLLY PROPOSAL

FINAL PRESENTATION FOR THE FOLLY PROPOSAL

THE DESIGN:

BASED ON THE SINUOUS APPEARANCE OF SOUND WAVES, THE FORM OF THE FOLLY REFLECTS THE FLUIDITY OF WAVES AND CREATES A LINK BETWEEN THE DESIGN AND SOUND. THE LINES OF THE DESIGN ARE IN RELATION TO THE SITE RESPONSE. HENCE, NOT ONLY DOES THE FORM REFLECT THE CONTINUITY OF SOUND WAVES, BUT IT ALSO ENHANCES THE TOPOGRAPHIC LAYERING OF THE LANDSCAPE (OF MYERS PARK).

THE EVENT:

RECASTING THE ATMOSPHERIC QUALITY OF SOUND WAVES, THE PROPOSED IDEA IS TO ESTABLISH A MISTY ENVIRONMENT THAT ALLOWS THE AUDIENCE TO PERCEIVE A DIFFERNT REALM OR QUALITY OF THE SITE. LED LIGHTING IS INCORPORATED AS PART OF THE FOLLY TO FURTHER EMPHASIZE THE FORM AS WELL AS THE ENVIRONMENT DESIRED.
